چکیده

Objectives: The goal of this research was to compare lateral cephalometric radiography and cavum radiography in nasopharyngeal airway space evaluation. Methods: The sample of this study consisted of 36 Brazilian mouth breathing children, no racial distinction, with ages ranging from 5 to 12. These children were selected in Recife/PE, Brazil (2005) and divided into 6 groups. In each group, the radiographs were taken on the same day. The sample was composed of 72 radiographs, 36 lateral cephalometric and 36 cavum. Results: The results were based on the Schulhof method and, at the end, an Index representing a summary of all measurements taken was calculated. Student paired t-test, chi-square, Pearson correlation and Kappa index scores were calculated to analyze the results. Only the values of the Airway Occupation Percentage were significantly different (p = 0.006) among the analyzed radiographs. A high degree of correlation was found for all measurements, including the Index values. Conclusions: It can be concluded that, both the lateral cephalometric radiography and the cavum radiography can be used for nasopharyngeal airway space evaluation. Abstract

Lateral cephalometric radiograph versus lateral nasopharyngeal radiograph for quantitative evaluation of nasopharyngeal airway space

OBJECTIVE This study compared lateral radiographs of the nasopharynx (LN) and lateral cephalometric radiographs (LC) used to assess nasopharyngeal airway space in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS One examiner measured the nasopharyngeal space of 15 oral breathing patients aged between 5 and 11 years old by using LN and LC. Both assessments were made twice with a 15-day interval in between. Inte...

مقایسه شاخص‌های سفالومتری فضای بینی حلقی بین دو گروه از بیماران تنفس دهانی با انسداد قدامی و خلفی بینی

Introduction: Two main causes of nasal airway obstruction and mouth breathing Consist: 1- anterior nasal obstruction is caused by obstruction in nasal cavity, 2- posterior (nasopharyngeal) obstruction is caused by adenoid enlargement and decreased nasopharyngeal airway. The purpose of this study was the comparison of nasopharyngeal cephalometric measurements between two groups of mouth breathin...

بررسی ارتباط هیپرتروفی آدنوئید با زوایای سفالومتریک قاعده جمجمه

Background and Aim: Adenoids are normally large in children and their size starts to reduce during adolescence. Hypertrophic adenoids could be associated with allergic reactions. Enlarged adenoids result in nasal breathing difficulties and the child is forced to switch to mouth breathing. Airway obstruction causes postural alterations of jaw, tongue and head, and due to persistent obstruction, ...

A comparison of nasopharyngeal endoscopy and lateral cephalometric radiography in the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal airway obstruction.

Two auxiliary methods of diagnosing nasopharyngeal airway obstruction were compared. Cephalometric radiography and nasopharyngeal videoendoscopy were evaluated for efficacy in terms of reproducibility and validity. Thirty orthodontic patients (7 to 12 years of age) seeking otorhinolaryngologic treatment for mouth breathing, or mouth and nose breathing, had nasopharyngeal endoscopy and radiograp...
